Tony's story: it's never too late to make choices
At 65, Tony has shown that age is no barrier to making new choices in life. Tony, a resident of 30 years in HomeChoices shared supported accommodation, advised two years ago through his personal plan that he wanted to move to a flat and live on his own.
Many people in Tony’s life were nervous that he wouldn’t be able to cope, but Tony was determined. So we developed a two year program to develop Tony’s independent living skills in areas such as cooking, budgeting, washing, travel, phone etiquette and shopping.
By 2009, Tony was ready to start looking for a flat, and found one he liked close to two HomeChoices houses.
In March, Tony became the first person to be supported to transition to independent living through the innovative Living My Life My Way program.
Tony is happier than ever with his new living arrangements. He likes the balance of being able to choose to do what he wants, when he wants, with the security of staff support when he needs it.
I like being able to have my say about what I do every day and that people listen to me.
