SustainAbility Stars
SustainAbility Stars is our program in HomeChoices to encourage people with disability living in group homes to save water and energy and reduce their waste.
Research from EW Tipping Foundation’s SustainAbility Project shows that group homes can use on average 3 times the energy and water of other Victorian households. Apart from the impact this has on the environment, people with disability are often on low incomes and will have difficulty meeting rising utility costs.
Three of our houses took part in a pilot program in 2009 and were able to significantly reduce their consumption levels. Now, all HomeChoices houses are taking part.
SustainAbility Stars invites the residents in each house to commit to undertaking four simple actions in each area of water, energy, waste and transport to help reduce their environmental footprint.
Our focus on social outcomes encourages residents to take a leadership role and teach others about household sustainability.
