Supported Independent Living
At HomeChoices, we understand the needs of people with disability and the issues facing them and their families. Our supported independent living programs help people to choose how they live.
Many people with disability would like to change the way they live. Some want to have greater choice and independence in their shared accommodation setting, and others want to move out of shared accommodation or their family home and live independently.
Although people know what they would like to do, they often face many obstacles to achieving this: lack of self-confidence, family fears, limited social networks, lack of independent living skills and lack of support services.
Our supported independent living programs fill this gap. Our programs bring peace of mind to families and people with disability. We work with the people we support and their families to develop independent living skills and to support people to move to independent living if that is their choice.
Our support staff create programs to teach independent living skills for both shared settings and independent living.
Through programs such as Direct Life and Living My Life My Way, we can help people to find accommodation and housemates, strengthen social and family networks and live independently with appropriate on-going support.
Onie lives in our shared home in Swan Hill. Staff are helping her to achieve her goal of moving out of shared accommodation. Click here to read Onie’s story.
