My Future My Choice

Keeping young people out of nursing homesMy Future My Choice is a government initiative developed in response to community concern over the plight of “young people in nursing homes.”

Young people (defined as under the age of 50) who have suffered a serious brain injury from an accident or stroke or who have a degenerative illness like multiple sclerosis and can no longer be cared for at home need high levels of care 24 hours a day. They are often placed in nursing homes for the aged because there is nowhere else to go.

Nursing homes are not designed to meet the needs of younger people requiring rehabilitation and support.

For a young person in a nursing home where there are usually very rigid routines and a lack of specialist or rehabilitation support, there is little security, little privacy, little independence and often little hope for the future. Without specialised support, young people cannot develop to their full potential.

Through the initiative, Department of Human Services is undertaking the construction of purpose-built homes to accommodate younger people who live or are at risk of living in residential aged care. Each house will cater for 6 residents and staff.

EW Tipping Foundation has been successful in tenders for four of these houses. In a major project for 2010, four new houses will be built with our input in Moe, Wodonga, Bairnsdale and Oak Park.

The residences will cater specifically for young persons’ needs in a home environment allowing better access for families, and giving younger people with a disability the maximum independence and community access possible based on their individual needs and circumstances.
